A Memorable Senior Banquet

This past Sunday, April 29, the Hood College Athletic Department hosted a senior banquet in the BB&T Arena to recognize 52 student-athletes for their achievements.

We were all dressed up in our business-casual attire, introductory remarks were made from SAAC Vice President Lacey Creelman, President Volpe, and Dean White. Then it was time to eat!

Aramark provided great choices for dinner – vegetarian lasagna, redskin potatoes, chicken & rice, snap peas, and lot more yummy choices including chocolate mousse and apple pie!

After our meal, Coaches from each team spoke amidst friends and family members about the athletes and their season. It was refreshing to hear what these coaches had to share about their athletes. Hard work, great leadership, and an overall good attitude were some of the many characteristics that were highlighted about our senior players.

Following the story-sharing, there were 7 different types of awards that were presented both to a female and male athlete. Since there was a tie for one of the award, there were 15 award recipients total.

All the student-athlete award winners from the Senior Banquet.

Maria Moss, a senior lacrosse player, enjoyed this part of the evening especially -“I felt that every award winner really deserved the awards they received, and they were well dispersed throughout all sports.”

Click here to get the details on the award winners including pictures of the recipients and descriptions of the awards.

What better way to end our athletic careers at Hood then to hear about the accomplishments of your fellow seniors? This ceremony left me feeling extremely proud of where I chose to go to school- I have met some wonderful people.

I received the Coach’s Award, along with Brenden Straughn, a four-year Men’s Basketball player.

A big congratulations to all the Hood College senior athletes! We made it!

Gettysburg-Washington Results

I unfortunately couldn’t make it to the Gettysburg-Washington game, but I was antsy waiting to see how it went.

With an end score of 15-5, Gettysburg took title once again as the Centenniel Conference Champions.

A big congrats to both teams! Good luck to Gettysburg in their next game on May 9 in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

Check out the boxscore and recap of yesterday’s game. The recap link includes a great video of Gettysburg’s highlights.

F&M Lax Help Shorewomen get to CC Final

Now that my lacrosse season has ended, I can’t help but look at how other teams are doing in their final games. I came across some interesting news posted by Lacrosse Magazine tonight.

Their article was about No.7 Franklin & Marshall Women’s Lacrosse Team’s recent hazing scandal. This incident has been under investigation by the school since February, and a series of events has led to the cancellation of the team’s season.

The Coach, Lauren Paul, has been fired and 11 players have been suspended.

According to another article published around 9 P.M. by Lacrosse Magazine, “Twenty-seven players are listed in F&M’s cumulative season statistics. The team’s three leading scorers to date are among those no longer listed on the roster.”

The players left on the roster consisted of 15 underclassmen and one senior. The players made a decision to end their 2012 season.

As a result, the Diplomats will no longer be playing at No. 2 Gettysburg in the Centennial Conference Championship. Washington College is now set to play the Bullets Sunday April 29 at 1 P.M.

Though the Shorewomen are Ranked No. 34 in the country among Division III schools (according to Laxpower) I’m glad these girls get to play in this tournament!

I am seriously considering going to the game since Hood is only 4o minutes from Gettysburg College.

I’ll be sure to update the page on how the game goes! Good luck to both teams!

A shout out to: Bailey from Gettysburg and Mollie & Brie from Wash! GOOD LUCK LADIES!

Last Practice: WaCkY dAy

The day before our last practice, my fellow captain sent me a text saying: “I talked to coach and asked if we could possibly have a theme day for practice today- to liven it up a bit. She said yeah, what kind of theme would you want to do?”

We had been talking about doing a practice like this for weeks- so I was extremely pumped to have this be a FUN and productive last practice .

We chose to make it a WaCkY day for practice, and man, it was fun! Being goofy really lightened up everyones mood and allowed us to laugh at each other. It was a great change of pace.

It had us asking ourselves: “Why didn’t we do this earlier?”

Check out a couple pictures we took after our practice. 🙂

End of 2011-2012 Lacrosse Season

Well, it’s been a roller coaster since my last post – we played our final two away games and played our final match in the pouring rain at Stevenson on April 18.

Mary Washington, now No. 16 in the nation, defeated us 22-3 on April 11.

This was our last home game, so we tried to make it a good one. On my way to the field, reality set in: it was my last time playing on my home turf. I may or may not have teared up on my way to the game…

To prevent more crying, just click here to view the details of our last hoo-rah on the Thomas Athletic Field.

This year has been tough with injuries and unfortunately, a lack of motivation and drive. But, throughout all of the negative aspects of the season, we did have moments of greatness.

In our fight against Wesley on April 15, we displayed our toughness and true determination. Helene really stepped up and stopped 15 shots that kept us in the game. Every single girl on our team worked extremely hard, and it was a great feeling. Though our fight wasn’t enough to snag a CAC win against our conference rival, we walked off the field knowing that we gave it our all.

We lost 16-9. Take a look at the boxscore here.

Our final game against No. 23 Stevenson was hard fought as well. We did not do well with the double and triple-teaming we were faced with, we tried our hardest to gain possession and get the ball in the back of the net. The end score was 16-4, and we are proud of how we ended our last game together.

Some of us are really upset to be ending the season. For many of the girls, it’s the beginning of a college lacrosse career, and for others it’s the end of it. Either way, the 2011-2012 lacrosse season is over for us.

We finish with a record of 2-15. It’s hard to say that — or type that. But, as my Aunt Tina always says “it is what it is.” And I truly believe that. It is what it is. And instead of dwelling on it, we need to work harder for a better season next year.

Senior Day- Where did the time go?

March 31, 2012 was a bitter-sweet day for five players on the Hood Women’s Lax team: #1 Maria Moss, #4 Kati Vu, #6 myself, Julia Banks, #13 Jenn Fischer, and #27 Helene Butler.

We took on a CAC rival, Marymount University for our senior game. We played a lot better than we have in the past. Our parents and fans could tell we were fighting for a close score. Like Kati Vu had posted on our Facebook page after the game, “We might have lost today, but the heart was there. I was proud to walk off the field.” We know that we tried as hard as we could.

Take a look at the recap and boxscore.

Before the game started, we had a ceremony honoring the seniors. As we walked to the middle of the field with our parents, our achievements of the past four years were announced along with our involvement on campus and plans after graduation. We received an action shot taken by Charlie Covell along and a bouquet of colorful spring flowers. Allison Althouse took our picture with our parents, our mascot,  Blaze, Hood College Athletic Director, Gib Romaine and  Coach Evans. It was wonderful and emotional.

Click here to view our senior day ceremony.

Since the game, I’ve been reflecting on how we felt during the ceremony. Four years of dedication and hard work led us to this day. It’s an ending of a chapter. An end of mandatory early preseason practices, and towel sprints. Four years worth of sweat (yes, we sweat even when it’s below freezing at 6 A.M. in February), some bloody knuckles caused by checking, and always, I mean always a lot of tears (It’s inevitable when you’re on a team with upwards of 15 almost-20-somethings.

With all of the hell we put our bodies through the past four years, I will always miss it. The rush of scoring a goal. The thrill that causing a turnover brings. I will always miss it.

Thank you to all the underclassmen who helped make our day so special. We love you ❤
